SHELL TURBO OILS T
Premium Lubricant For Modern Steam,Water And Industrial Type Gas Turbines
Introduction
Modern turbines generally impose more severe conditions on the oil than earlier types while at the same time requiring greater stability. Steam and bearing temperatures as
well as oil pressures are higher, and the rate of oil circulation is often more rapid while the output from power station is performed by fewer units of larger size. Greater
stability and reliability is therefore required of the oil and some authorities have issued more stringent specifications for turbine oils.
Steam Turbines
Spot temperatures in steam turbines can be as high as 200 C, but the highest local oil temperature in the bearings is usually about 100+ C. Oil enters the bearings at a
temperature of 40 C to 50 C and the oil flow rate limits the temperature rise through the bearings to 17 C to 20 C. These moderate operating temperatures assist in
giving the oil a long life which, with top-up, can be for the life of the turbine. Most problems in steam turbine oil systems are caused by contamination which can
effect demulsibility, air release, foaming and oxidation.
Aircraft-derived Turbines
The gas generator part of these units is derived from aircraft gas turbines and made by specialists such as Rolls Royce, Pratt and Whitney, Allison, GEC etc. Because of
the very high bearing temperatures mineral oils are unsuitable and only the approved aviation synthetic grades should be used.The “power” of “free-turbine” part of the unit has its own separate lubrication system and operates at temperatures similar to the heavy-duty gas turbines.For this system steam turbine oils are used.
Water Turbines
Oil temperatures in water turbines are low and although bearing loads are constant, they are very high. Steam turbine oils are used for the system lubrication and provide
the required good water separating properties and protection against rust and oxidation. Under certain conditions high viscosity oils are required for the hub of
Kaplan heads.
Description
Shell Turbo Oils T are premium lubricants specially designed for :-
* Steam Turbines
* Heavy Duty Gas Turbines
* Aircraft-derived Turbines (power section)
* Water Turbine
* Associated Geared Units
It is also suitable for :-
* Air compressors
* Lubrication of High Speed Gears
* Hydraulic Systems
* Other applications requiring high quality rust and oxidation-inhibited oils which
separate readily from water.
Shell Turbo Oils T are blended from turbine quality mineral oils that have been highly refined and specially treated. They incorporate a carefully balanced combination of an
anti-oxidant, a rust inhibitor and a metal passivator. They show oxidation stability of the highest order, excellent demulsibility and resistance to foaming combined with the
ability to release entrained air quickly. These properties are retained during prolonged service.
