&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Thermal Stability&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Modern hydraulic systems frequently operate in extreme conditions.&amp;nbsp; As reservoir capacities are &lt;br /&gt;often smaller nowadays, the tendency, in some cases, is therefore to operate at higher temperatures. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In these conditions, the thermal stability of a hydraulic oil, the measure of its ability to resist &lt;br /&gt;degradation and sludging at high temperatures becomes particularly significant. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The accepted test of an oil&amp;#39;s thermal stability is to maintain it at a temperature of 135 C in the &lt;br /&gt;presence of steel and copper.&amp;nbsp; After seven days the weight changes in the metals are measured &lt;br /&gt;and any discolouration noted, and any sludge in the oil sample is recorded. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;New Shell Tellus Oils&lt;/strong&gt; gave excellent results in this test.&amp;nbsp; Weight loss in copper and steel catalysts was negligible and there was virtually &lt;br /&gt;no discolouration of the copper.&amp;nbsp; No sludge was found in the oil sample. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Shell Tellus Oils have been tested for oxidation resistance, using the well known Turbine Oil Stability Test (TOST).&amp;nbsp; In this test the oil is &lt;br /&gt;heated at 95 C in the presence of water and oxygen with copper and iron as catalysts. The time taken for the acid value to reach 2 mg &lt;br /&gt;KOH/g is then measured, or the acid value measured after 1000 hours. The test results showed that Shell Tellus Oils &lt;br /&gt;have an oxidation life up to four times as long as some other anti-wear hydraulic oils. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Anti-wear Performance &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;When designing anti-wear hydraulic oils, priority is often given to the incorporation of anti-wear &lt;br /&gt;additives which become active only under severe loading conditions. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As a result, some formulations overlook the need to provide effective anti-wear performance at low load. &lt;br /&gt;Shell Tellus Oils&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the case of new, however,all operating conditions have been taken into account. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Shell Tellus Oils&lt;/strong&gt; give outstanding results in the tough 35VQ25 test for anti-wear performance at &lt;br /&gt;high load.&amp;nbsp; In addition, exceptionally good anti-wear performance has been recorded in the Vickers V104C vane pump test at both high and &lt;br /&gt;low load.&amp;nbsp; Whereas many hydraulic oils fail to meet the requirements of one or other of these &lt;br /&gt;Shell Tellus Oils tests, new&amp;nbsp; are shown to deliver excellent anti-wear performance regardless of operating conditions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Filterability&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;As hydraulic systems are designed with ever tighter tolerances, the filterability of an oil -- its &lt;br /&gt;ability to pass continuously through a fine filter -- becomes more and more important.But filterability can suffer when a hydraulic oil is &lt;br /&gt;affected by common contaminants such as water and calcium.&amp;nbsp; Reaction products are formed which can block the filter. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, extensive testing has demonstrated the excellent filterability characteristics of new Shell Tellus Oils,which eliminate premature blocking of the filter by reaction products. &lt;/p&gt;

In addition, outstanding performance is also observed when applying Shell in-house test conditions. These test the &lt;br /&gt;fluids over the complete range of pump operating conditions. The results have proven that Shell Tellus Oils S are capable of &lt;br /&gt;providing the ultimate protection under the extremes of operation found in real service. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;FZG gear rig test&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Gear rig tests are sometimes used for evaluating hydraulic oils and the best known is the FZG rig (Forschungsstelle für Zahnräder &lt;br /&gt;und Getriebebau - Technical Institute for the study of Gears and Drive Mechanisms). &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The rig utilises a pair of specially designed case-hardened spur gears and, for hydraulic oils, it is run at a pitch line velocity of 8.3 m/s, &lt;br /&gt;with an oil temperature of 90°C.&amp;nbsp; The test is carried out by running the gears for 15 minutes &lt;br /&gt;in the test oil then weighing the gears, after which the machine is reassembled and the load increased.&amp;nbsp; This procedure is carried out until at least 10 mg weight loss is recorded between the stages,&lt;br /&gt;or until the gears appear scuffed. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Many anti-wear hydraulic oils fail around the tenth stage but Shell Tellus Oils S easily exceed this performance level. &lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

Cracking or the breaking down of hydrocarbon molecules by heat. Here a large molecule ruptures into smaller &lt;br /&gt;molecules. Some appear as volatile gases,while others are unstable and polymerise into non-soluble deposits. The rate of &lt;br /&gt;cracking is insignificant until temperatures of around 320 C are reached. Above this temperature the rate rises steeply. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;2. Oxidation or the reaction of hydrocarbon oil with atmospheric oxygen. At room temperature this reaction occurs very &lt;br /&gt;slowly, but it accelerates rapidly with increasing temperature. Oxidation produces acids in the oil and, at a later &lt;br /&gt;stage, sludge. The viscosity of the oil generally increases. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Shell Thermia Oil B is based on carefully selected, highly refined, high viscosity index &lt;br /&gt;paraffinic base oils. It has exceptionally good stability at bulk temperatures up to 320°C.The rates of cracking and oxidation are very low,giving maximum oil life.&lt;br /&gt;This assumes an efficient fluid heater with good pump circulation so that film temperatures on the heater surfaces do not exceed 340°C. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Service Life &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;The life of Shell Thermia Oil B in any system depends on the design and usage of the system. If it is well designed and not subjected to abnormal workloads the life can be many &lt;br /&gt;years. It is important to monitor oil condition regularly as rates of change in physical characteristics are more significant than actual values. A sample should be taken from any &lt;br /&gt;newly-filled system about one week after start-up to establish a datum. &lt;p&gt;•&amp;nbsp; Outstanding oxidation stability The lubricant&amp;#39;s service life depends, to a great extent, on its oxidative stability.&amp;nbsp; Excellent results &lt;br /&gt;in both the &amp;#39;hot oxidation test&amp;#39; (FTM5308) and the &amp;#39;TOST&amp;#39; life test (ASTM-D943) clearly demonstrate&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;Turbo GT’s potential for extended service life compared to conventional mineral oil technology. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Steam Turbines&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Spot temperatures in steam turbines can be as high as 200 C, but the highest local oil temperature in the bearings is usually about 100+ C.&amp;nbsp; Oil enters the bearings at a &lt;br /&gt;temperature of 40 C to 50 C and the oil flow rate limits the temperature rise through the bearings to 17 C to 20 C.&amp;nbsp; These moderate operating temperatures assist in &lt;br /&gt;giving the oil a long life which, with top-up, can be for the life of the turbine. Most problems in steam turbine oil systems are caused by contamination which can &lt;br /&gt;effect demulsibility, air release, foaming and oxidation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Aircraft-derived Turbines &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;The gas generator part of these units is derived from aircraft gas turbines and made by specialists such as Rolls Royce, Pratt and Whitney, Allison, GEC etc.&amp;nbsp; Because of &lt;br /&gt;the very high bearing temperatures mineral oils are unsuitable and only the approved aviation synthetic grades should be used.The “power” of “free-turbine” part of the unit has its own separate lubrication system and operates at temperatures similar to the heavy-duty gas turbines.For this system steam turbine oils are used.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Water Turbines&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Oil temperatures in water turbines are low and although bearing loads are constant, they are very high.&amp;nbsp; Steam turbine oils are used for the system lubrication and provide &lt;br /&gt;the required good water separating properties and protection against rust and oxidation.&amp;nbsp; Under certain conditions high viscosity oils are required for the hub of &lt;br /&gt;Kaplan heads. &lt;/p&gt;
